Responsibilities
Reporting line: The individual will report directly to the Luxembourg Tax Vice President based in Luxembourg, and indirectly to Oaktree's Co-head of Global Tax Structuring based in London.
Responsibilities include:
- Providing ongoing tax support and oversight of Oaktree's European investments;
- Leading tax structuring advice preparation by external advisors (for new acquisitions, exits, restructurings and refinancing), balancing commercial views with tax and legal considerations which includes providing tax review comments with respect to tax structuring advice and transaction documentation related to European deals;
- Discussing tax issues identified on transactions with the relevant deal team and assisting them in understanding the tax impact of their decisions;
- Contribution toward the preparation of materials to facilitate senior level discussions on tax topics;
- Ensuring appropriate controls are maintained to manage tax risk, such as permanent establishment creation risk;
- Partnering with Investment Professionals, Luxembourg Fund Affiliate teams and external parties to develop and implement consistent tax positions across investments across different European countries;
- Provide training and guidance as needed to Investment Professionals and other business groups within Oaktree;
- Tracking and assessing ongoing tax developments across European jurisdictions that could impact key business areas and/or investment structures, and providing timely updates to Investment Professionals and the Oaktree Tax team;
- Develop understanding of US entity classification for investments holding structuring purposes;
- Supporting the Oaktree Tax team with firm-wide and International Tax team specific goals and initiatives, and other ad hoc projects as required, and
- Developing and maintaining relevant industry contacts and manage relationships with third party tax advisors, accounting firms and law firms with a continued focus on identifying best in class service providers.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree relevant to position. A Master's degree in Taxation is desirable;
- Professional accounting or tax qualification, such as ACA, ACCA, ATT or CTA, or relevant equivalent (e.g. law degree with experience practicing in Tax) is desirable;
- Minimum 4 + years of relevant tax experience, preferably combined experience in public accounting (ideally Big Four) or an international law firm and private industry with exposure to international / cross-border tax planning, compliance, and similar tax concepts;
- Strong cross-border transactional experience is essential;
- Good understanding of Luxembourg tax issues relevant to private equity style investment structures and double tax treaties is a must;
- Knowledge of general accounting principles and procedures, and
- Skilled in using Microsoft Office, tax, and other financial reporting tools / applications is useful.
